Community Voices Needed: Share Your Story

All of our happenings provide an opportunity for our community to come together and share with each other resources that we've found helpful. When a community gathers, an amazing thing happens: its members build each other up and help the whole network to get stronger. Join us, be strengthened, and strengthen others!

Recently, Darren Marquardt, Executive Director of NVRC, met Congressman Suhas Subramanyam at the Loudoun Disability Resource Fair. During their conversation, they discussed a number of concerns currently being experienced within the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community related to accessibility, communication access, employment, and disability inclusion.

As part of his outreach efforts, Congressman Subramanyam and his team expressed interest in learning more directly from community members about the real-world experiences and challenges Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals are facing in the DMV region. The goal is to help ensure that the voices, experiences, and perspectives or our community are seen, heard, and better understood by policymakers and the public.

NVRC is helping gather stories, concerns, and examples related to:

  • * Communication access barriers
  • * Loss or reduction of accommodations
  • * Lack of ASL interpreters or captioning at public events or government briefings
  • * Workplace accessibility concerns
  • * Disability inclusion and equal access issues
  • * Other challenges affecting Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals and families

If you have personal experience, concern or story you would be willing to share, please contact Darren Marquardt at execdirector@nvrc.org.

Personal stories may be shared confidentially unless you specifically give permission for your name or details to be used publicly.

At NVRC, our role is not political. Our goal is advocacy, education, and ensuring that the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community has a voice in conversations that affect accessibility, communication, and equal opportunity.
