TUCSON- They may entertain your child, but noisy toys are causing more damage than just annoying you; they could be causing permanent hearing loss.
According to the Arizona Commission for the Deaf and the Hard of Hearing, noise induced hearing loss has gone up in recent years and noisy toys are to blame.
According to Michele Michaels from ACDH, one in five children under the age of 12 has some degree of hearing loss,
“Right now in the state we have about two out of 1,000 babies born with hearing loss, but by the time their teenagers one out of five, that’s 20% of our teens having mild hearing loss and that’s caused by constant exposure to loud noises. It starts with toys.”
If you already own a “noisy” toy at home experts recommend putting heavy thick tape over the speaker, and limiting the number of hours your child uses the toy or MP3 player.
