MEMORANDUM

TO:                 INTERESTED INDIVIDUALS
FROM:            RONALD L. LANIER
SUBJECT:     CANDIDATES FOR VDDHH ADVISORY BOARD

The Virginia Department for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (VDDHH) is working with the Secretary of the Commonwealth to identify individuals interested in serving on the VDDHH Advisory Board.  The VDDHH Advisory Board meets four times a year, on the first Wednesday of February, May, August and November.  Meetings usually run from 9:30 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. and focus on discussions of VDDHH programs and services or issues affecting consumers who are deaf and hard of hearing that might be addressed by the agency.  The Board also follows the activities of the General Assembly, commenting on legislation when it impacts the agency or Virginians who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Board members are typically appointed for four-year terms. According to the Code of Virginia, the VDDHH Advisory Board has slots for 9 members – four persons who are deaf or hard of hearing, four professionals in a related field, and, one parent of a deaf or hard of hearing child.  Currently, there are three (3) upcoming vacancies on the Board.  One position available on the Board is for a parent of a child who is deaf or hard of hearing; the second position is for a professional in a field related to deafness; and the third is for a consumer who is hard of hearing.

Anyone interested in being appointed should complete an online application form on the Secretary of the Commonwealth’s web site: www.commonwealth.virginia.gov.   This page includes detailed information about the appointment process.
