Hamilton Relay Offers $500 Scholarships: Application deadline is March 1, 2016

Hamilton Relay offers the scholarship program to High School Seniors.  
The deadline for all High Seniors to enter is March 1, 2016.

Creating opportunities for higher education is a priority for Hamilton Relay. The goal of the Hamilton Relay Scholarship is to support students who are deaf, hard of hearing, deaf-blind or have difficulty speaking in their post-secondary education.

The Hamilton Relay Scholarship is extended to a qualifying high school student living within one of the states where Hamilton Relay is the contracted telecommunications relay and/or captioned telephone service provider. This includes California, District of Columbia, Georgia, Idaho, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Montana, New Mexico, Nevada, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Virginia and Washington.

In each of these states, a $500 scholarship will be awarded to one eligible applicant. All applicants must meet eligibility requirements and submit required application materials prior to the March 1, 2016 deadline.

2015 NBC Universal Tony Coelho Media Scholarship Accepting Applications

The American Association of People with Disabilities is pleased to announced that we are accepting applications for the 2015 NBCUniversal Tony Coelho Media Scholarship.  We are offering four scholarships, which can be used for for the spring, summer, or fall semesters of 2015, to 2nd year associate students; undergraduate sophomores, juniors, and seniors; and graduate students with disabilities who are pursuing communication or media-related degrees.  Each recipient will receive $5,625 for the tuition and fees at their college or university.

Students will need to provide us the following items to apply for the scholarship:

Completed 2015 NBCUniversal Tony Coelho Media Scholarship application (download from the AAPD website here)

  • Resume
  • Unofficial Transcript
  • Two 300-350 word essays answering the following questions:
    • What inspired you to pursue a communications/media related degree?
    •  How will you use your degree to positively impact the disability community?
  • A letter of recommendation from a professor, academic advisor, or mentor

All applications and supporting materials should be emailed to scholarship@aapd.com by 5:00PM on Friday, April 24, 2015 in an accessible format.

ON HEALTH AND DISABILITY

AAHD is accepting applications for the AAHD Scholarship Program (2014-2015) which supports students with disabilities pursuing higher education in a field related to disability and health.  Preference is given to students who plan to pursue undergraduate/graduate studies in the field of public health, behavioral health, epidemiology, health promotion, disability studies, to include disability policy and disability research. Scholarships are limited to under $1,000. Scholarships are competitive each year. Please visit the AAHD website at www.aahd.us/scholarship to download application.

2014 Through The Looking Glass Scholarship Announcement & Application

Through the Looking Glass and its National Center for Parents with Disabilities and their Families are pleased to announce new scholarships specifically for high school seniors or college students who have parents with disabilities.  A total of fifteen $1000 scholarships will be given out Fall 2014.  These scholarships are part of Through the Looking Glass’ National Center for Parents with Disabilities and their Families.  There are separate eligibility requirements for high school seniors and for college students:

1. High School Seniors.  To be eligible, a student must be a high school graduate (or graduating senior) by Summer 2014, have at least one parent with a disability, and be planning to attend an accredited technical or vocational school or a two- or four-year college in Fall 2014.  Those planning to attend a two- or four-year college should be pursuing an AA, AS, BA or BS degree.

2. College Students. To be eligible, a student must be currently enrolled in an accredited technical or vocational school or a two- or four-year college with continued enrollment through Fall 2014, have at least one parent with a disability, and be 21 years of age or younger as of  March 17, 2014 .   Those enrolled in a two- or four-year college should be pursuing an AA, AS, BA or BS degree.

All application materials must be postmarked by March 17, 2014.  Individuals may submit only one application per award period. 

Selection criteria for all scholarships include academic performance, community activities and service, letter of recommendation and an essay describing the experience of growing up with a parent with a disability.  Five of the fifteen scholarships will also consider financial hardship and academic potential in addition to the other selection criteria.
