“The Story of the Quilt”

December 2, 2014 in Community News

Once again NVRC is having a quilt raffle to raise money for NVRC’s programs and services.  The quilt being raffled is queen size, reversible, and has warm tones.  It was created by quilter Patti Pratuch with the help of her sister. They used fabric that once belonged to my mother, whose quilts adorn many of the walls in the rooms at NVRC. Patti’s son, Michael, has a hearing loss.

I’d like to share a little about my mother, Norma Webber McIntosh, who passed away some years ago after being severely injured in a car accident. Mom was the oldest of three daughters born to my grandmother and grandfather. They lived on a dairy farm in Maine. She met my father when they were both students at Becker College in Worcester, Mass., before he enlisted in the Navy during World War II.  When my father returned home, they married. My sister Gayle was born two years before I was, and later our family grew to include my brothers Randy and David.

Mom was a whiz on her Singer sewing machine, making beautiful clothes for me and Gayle. She also did needlepoint and belonged to a garden club, but I think that when she discovered quilting she knew she had found the art that made her happiest. She loved to learn and teach others, and her quilting became more and more adventurous.

I like to think that Mom would be thrilled to see other quilters like Patti Pratuch and her sister now using the fabric she had planned for her next projects but never lived to complete.  I knew that they were the perfect match when Patti mentioned that, like Mom, she was creating quilts to send to our veterans returning home.
