Skip to content Northern Virginia Resource Center for Deaf & Hard of Hearing Persons

After an invitation from the Northern Virginia Association of the Deaf (NVAD)  to apply for a grant, Interim Executive Director Bob Loftur-Thun applied to NVAD for a $25,000 grant that will jump-start the new NVRC Deaf Seniors Stay Connected! Program, expand the NVRC Communications Access Fund, and establish the NVRC Digital Opportunities Center.

The NVRC Deaf Seniors Stay Connected! Program includes a team of volunteers who reach out via videophone and visits to Deaf Seniors wholive alone. Volunteers will have a scheduled list of calls to seniors to see if they need anything, to proactively inform them of upcoming social events and to engage them in conversations on a regular basis.

The NVRC Communications Access Fund provides free or discounted ASL Interpreting services to Deaf persons on a sliding scale.

The goal of the NVRC Digital Opportunities Center is to provide training and real work experience to Deaf and Hard of Hearing interns and job seekers in the areas of help desk technical support, interactive video webcasting, video production and captioning, graphic/digital design, e-learning module design and production, e-learning management system administration skills, and virtual (VR) and augmented reality (AR) app development. Interns and job seekers at the Digital Opportunities Center will work on real-world NVRC projects such as computer technical support to seniors, NVRC interactive video webcasts, and e-learning and AR and VR app development.

Thank you NVAD for supporting NVRC in launching new services and expanding services to our constituents!

NVAD President Melanie Williams presents NVRC Interim Executive Director Bob Loftur-Thun, and NVRC Board Members Tom Dowling and Gary Viall, with a $25,000 grant check!

Since Virginia budget negotiation is still going on with respect to the state budget, it is not too late for advocacy.  The Northern Virginia Aging Network (NVAN) committee has  drafted a template that can be used to advocate on behalf of the budget items .

  1. Medicaid expansion
  2. Funds for the Long-term Care Ombudsman Program
  3. Funds for community based services through area agencies on aging
  4. No Wrong Door

Here is the letter template.  You just have to personalize it to make it your own.

Please advocate for these budget items by sending in the downloadable letter template, and sending it to your Virginia State Senator. You can find your senator from this websitehttps://apps.senate.virginia.gov/Senator/index.php

Below you will find the names of the Conference Committee members.   Please write to them as well.
