Did you know that Fairfax County Fire and Rescue has a program to provide visual smoke detector equipment?  They do!

That program is for deaf, hard of hearing, or deaf-blind people who live in Fairfax County, own their own home, and don't have visual smoke detector equipment.

There is an application form that you can send in to apply.

How?  Contact NVRC for a copy of the form.  You fill out the top part, and NVRC fills out the bottom part.  Then we send it to Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department.

When it is approved, Fairfax County Fire and Rescue will contact you directly to set up an appointment time to bring the equipment to your home and install it for you.

If you have questions, or need more information, contact NVRC.

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) will host their annual Special Education Conference on Saturday, April 1 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Hayfield Secondary School, 7630 Telegraph Road, Alexandria. The conference is free and open to parents, educators, and community members.

Attend the conference to learn the latest research, strategies, and trends in the education of students with disabilities. Workshop topics will include executive functioning skills, dyslexia, learning challenges, anxiety, autism spectrum disorder, and much more. The Exhibit Hall will feature vendors from Fairfax County Public Schools, government agencies, and non-profit organizations.

Register online or contact the Parent Resource Center at 703-204-3941 with questions.

As part of a grant initiative, Fairfax County is seeking help to understand the transportation patterns and mobility needs of older adults and individuals with disabilities within the county and the Cities of Fairfax and Falls Church. In order to do so, a survey has been created to measure the needs of the community.

If you are a senior, an individual with a disability, or a caregiver or family member to someone with transportation challenges,  please consider taking a few moments to complete a brief survey.

Your feedback will help identify improvements and strategies that will continue to allow those to age in place in the Fairfax community.

This survey will close August 1st.

Questions regarding this survey or requests for alternative format can be directed to Susan Shaw (703.324.7075) or Cynthia Alarico (703.324.7055).

At our Alliance for Human Services Annual Meeting last week, Marlene Blum reported that the long awaited county Human Needs Assessment is now released.   If you were there, you might have picked up a printed copy.

It is available on-line.  The link is: www.fairfaxcounty.gov/living/healthhuman/needs-assessment/

This report will frame our discussions with County officials over the next year.  Please download and review at least the summary.  Let us know what you think we should do next.
