Call to increase representation and visibility of deaf and hard of hearing people within both the WMATA and the DC Government.

WMATA Accessibility Advisory Council
Deadline to Apply: April 15, 2016 
About: Metro is looking for senior citizens and riders with disabilities to join the volunteer Accessibility Advisory Committee (AAC). The 20-member committee consists of six individuals each from Maryland, Virginia, the District of Columbia, and two at-large members. Positions are available for residents of the District of Columbia, Prince George’s County, Montgomery County, Arlington County, Fairfax County, Fairfax City, City of Falls Church, and City of Alexandria. To qualify for membership, individuals must be riders of Metrobus, Metrorail and/or MetroAccess, and are not Metro employees, contractors or elected officials. All positions are unpaid.  Metro’s Board of Directors will make the final selection of candidates from a collection candidates that represent an accurate cross-section of customers who are disabled and/or seniors and reflect a broad representation of people from different geographical locations in the Metro service area. 
DC Government Commission on Persons with Disabilities

About: The DC Commission On Persons With Disabilities shall be committed to enhancing the image, status, inclusion, and quality of life for all District of Columbia residents, visitors, and employees with disabilities, and to ensuring that they have the same rights and opportunities as those without disabilities. The Commission will serve as an advisory body to inform and advise the District on programs, services, facilities, and activities that impact the lives of residents with disabilities in the District of Columbia. The Commission will advocate on behalf of persons with disabilities and/or families of such persons to promote inclusive communities and service delivery systems and to provide opportunities for public input, outreach, and education. The Commission shall work within the Office of Disability Rights (ODR) and in collaboration with the Office of Human Rights, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliance and training programs, the Department on Disability Services, and all other agencies, boards, and commissions of the District of Columbia that affect the lives of residents with disabilities.
DC Government Developmental Disabilities State Planning Council

About:
The DD Council is a standing committee of the DC Commission on Persons with Disabilities. The DD Council shall advise and assist the Commission in identifying and addressing issues related to children, adults and older persons with developmental disabilities and their families; Engage in advocacy, capacity building, and systemic change activities that are consistent with the purposes of the federal Act; Participate fully in the work of the Commission by promoting collaboration and coordination among appropriate public and nonprofit organizations in ways that build and continuously improve on a coordinated, consumer-and-family-centered, consumer-and-family-directed system of supports and assistance that enable individuals with developmental disabilities to exercise self-determination, as independent, productive, integrated community members.
