The Impact of Hearing Loss on Dementia and Healthy Aging

Nicholas S. Reed, AuD, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine

Recent studies have shown the relationship between hearing loss and several other health- related issues such as cognitive decline (dementia) and increased hospitalizations. Based on the results of these studies, Dr. Reed will discuss how hearing loss clinically impacts the everyday health and functioning of older adults and how hearing devices and communication strategies can help.

Many of Assistant U.S. Attorney Steven Gordon’s recent cases come under the Dept. of Justice’s Barrier-Free Health Care Initiative targeting enforcement efforts on a critical area for individuals with disabilities – access to medical services and facilities. This Initiative includes effective communication for people who are deaf or have hearing loss, physical access to medical care for people with mobility disabilities, and equal access to treatment for people who have HIV/AIDS.

According to a recent National Council on Aging publication, financial scams, especially targeting older adults, have become so prevalent that they are now considered “the crime of the 21st century.”

Needless to say, the fraudsters are smart and creative — maybe smarter and more creative than we’re willing to give them credit for. Find out how to protect yourself and family members by attending this presentation.

We will hear from a panel of experts; the Fairfax Criminal Investigation Unit and Maria Couvillon, Postal Inspector at US Postal Inspection Service, on the latest fraud/scam investigations and how to avoid common scams.

Accessible Programs at the National Gallery of Art

Lorena Baines, Manager of Accessible Programs

Lorena Baines, the National Gallery’s first Manager of Accessible Programs, will introduce the National Gallery of Art’s Accessible Programs, which include the monthly ASL at the NGA, Art for ASL Learners, and the use of assistive listening devices on all programs. She will also provide an overview of the Gallery’s collections and introduce a few personal favorite works of art as well as a preview of some exciting upcoming exhibitions.
