Workshop Description: “Haptic Communication” is a form of nonverbal communication that
uses touch. In this workshop you will learn how to use Haptics to communicate information to a
Deafblind speaker or participant in a workshop by using special signs and ways of presenting
information. For example, you will learn some easy and efficient ways of explaining the set-up
of a room and where people are seated, creating your own “map” on the other person’s body or
arm. Then when someone in the room has a question, you can quickly convey to the Deafblind
person whom is talking by pointing to them on your map. You will also learn some ways to
provide real-time feedback about the emotions and interest-levels of people in the group, such as
when someone has burst out in laughter or is bored by the presentation (or may even be falling
asleep!) This workshop will be of benefit to Interpreters, Support Service Providers (SSPs) and
people interested in learning how to communicate information efficiently in ways other than
using traditional ASL signs. Signers and non-signers are welcome.

This workshop is being presented in conjunction with the annual VADB meeting which will be
held from 11:30am — 4:00pm, and non-members are welcome. Those who wish to stay for the
VADB Meeting will get Lunch provided courtesy of VDDHH. VADB is also seeking attendees
who are willing to serve as SSPs while they participate in the workshop and/or the meeting.
