New Book on Preparing Deaf, Hard of Hearing Students for Literary Success

Flagler College education professor Carl Williams has released his latest book, “Starting Points: Preparing Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students for Literacy Success,” through Butte Publications.
“Starting Points” is a textbook for use in programs preparing teachers to meet the educational needs of students who are deaf or hard of hearing. It will also benefit practicing teachers and other professionals in the field of deaf education.
Williams says he wrote the book primarily because the text he had been using in one of his Deaf Education courses was going out of print.
“Undergraduate texts on developing language and literacy in deaf students are few and far between, so I decided to write a book to use in my course,” said Williams. “Since I was scrambling to locate a book for my course, I assumed that other instructors in Deaf Education Teacher Preparation Programs were also doing the same.”
“Starting Points” is Williams’ third published text. He is also the author of “No Limits: A Practical Guide for Teaching Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students” and “It All Depends: A Casebook for Prospective Teachers of Students Who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing.”
Professor Williams received his Ed.D. in Educational Leadership and his M.Ed. in Special Education from the University of North Florida, and he received his B.A. in Deaf Education and English from Flagler College. His dissertation focused on the relationship between educational beliefs and instructional practices of
education interns. He is widely published and is a sought-after presenter on issues in deaf education.
